Lectio Divina, or 'Divine Reading,' is one of the oldest and most beloved practices in the Christian contemplative tradition. Rooted in the early monastic communities, it continues to transform lives today.
## The Four Steps
### 1. Lectio (Reading)
Slowly read a passage of Scripture, listening for a word or phrase that catches your attention. Read the passage several times, allowing it to sink deep into your heart.
### 2. Meditatio (Meditation)
Reflect on the word or phrase that spoke to you. Turn it over in your mind, exploring its meaning and its relevance to your life.
### 3. Oratio (Prayer)
Respond to God in prayer. Let the meditation lead you into conversation with the Divine. Share your thoughts, feelings, and desires with God.
### 4. Contemplatio (Contemplation)
Rest in God's presence. Let go of words and thoughts, simply being with God in loving silence.
## Getting Started
Begin with just 15-20 minutes each day. Choose a quiet place and a short Scripture passage. The Psalms and the Gospels are excellent starting points.
## A Community Practice
In our monastery, Lectio Divina is both a personal and communal practice. We gather regularly to share our insights and support each other's spiritual journey.
As you practice Lectio Divina, you will find that Scripture becomes not just something you read, but a living encounter with the Word of God.
